Six Prisoners Escape from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail; Three Re-Arrested, Three Still at Large
Agartala Bureau Dharmanagar, North Tripura | October 10 In a shocking incident on the morning of Maha Navami, six convicted prisoners escaped from the Dharmanagar Sub-Jail located in the Kalikapur area of North Tripura. At a time when the entire state was immersed in the festive spirit of Durga Puja, the daring jailbreak sent shockwaves across the district. According to reports, the convicts assaulted jail staff before fleeing in a dramatic, “filmy” manner. The news of the escape quickly spread, prompting immediate action from the district administration and police. A massive manhunt was launched by Dharmanagar Police, leading to a major breakthrough as three of the six escaped inmates were recaptured. The arrested prisoners have been identified as Narayan Dutta, Abdul Pata, and Rahim Ali. While Narayan Dutta and Abdul Pata were apprehended earlier, Rahim Ali — a resident of Uttar Phulbari village — was captured in Assam’s Sreebhumi area early Friday morning. He was wanted in several cases of theft and robbery. However, three other notorious fugitives — Roson Ali, Nazim Uddin (a known dacoit), and Sunil Debbarma — remain absconding. The police have intensified search operations across the state and enhanced surveillance along border areas to prevent the fugitives from escaping to neighboring Bangladesh. Police sources said that vital clues have been obtained during interrogation of the arrested trio, which could lead to the capture of the remaining fugitives. Superintendent of Police (North Tripura), Abinash Rai, stated, We are confident that the remaining fugitives will be arrested soon. Multiple police teams are working on the case.” Meanwhile, serious questions have been raised about lapses in jail security and administrative negligence. Following a preliminary investigation, five jail staff members have reportedly been suspended, and security at the sub-jail has been tightened. The incident has left Dharmanagar residents in shock and tension remains high. Although police action has brought some relief, locals say they won’t feel completely safe until the remaining escapees are caught.
