CM Saha Stresses Harmony, Credibility & Journalist Safety on National Press Day
Agartala, Nov 16: Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Saturday emphasized that maintaining political, social, and cultural harmony is among the foremost responsibilities of journalists, who act as the mirror of society. He was speaking at the inauguration of the National Press Day celebration organized by the ICA Department at Sukanta Academy Auditorium. The Chief Minister said that although journalism is a profession, it is best practiced with dedication and a strong sense of duty toward society. Calling accurate news dissemination an art, he highlighted this year’s theme for National Press Day: “Safeguarding Press Credibility Amidst Rising Misinformation.” Dr. Saha underlined the vital role newspapers and journalists play in strengthening democracy. While noting that freedom of speech and expression are the backbone of the media, he urged journalists to remain alert, responsible, and ethical in their reporting. Pointing to the increasing spread of misinformation on social media, the Chief Minister said that all stakeholders must work collectively to counter this challenge. He also praised the journalists of Tripura, stating that their quality is on par with journalists from other states. The Chief Minister encouraged senior journalists to conduct monthly workshops to help young professionals improve their skills and uphold ethical journalism. Referring to the murder of two journalists in previous years, Dr. Saha assured that efforts are ongoing to ensure justice for them. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to guaranteeing journalists’ safety and dignity. He added that several committees formed by the ICA Department for journalists’ welfare have submitted recommendations, which will be implemented in phases. The event was attended by Executive Editor Manas Pal, Editor Shanit Debroy, Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar, ICA Secretary Dr. P. K. Chakraborty, and ICA Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee. Two senior journalists — Pranamay Saha of Amarpur and Anupam Bhattacharjee of Kailashahar — were felicitated with shawls, mementos, and financial honorariums during the programme.
