Agartala, October 21: Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Monday paid rich tributes to the police and security personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty, stating that the Police, Armed Forces, and Border Forces play a vital role not only in maintaining law and order but also in protecting the nation’s sovereignty and integrity. The Chief Minister was speaking at the Police Commemoration Day observance held at the Manoranjan Debbarma Smriti Stadium in Agartala. “On this day, we remember the brave martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation and its people,” Dr. Saha said, recalling the historical significance of October 21. He mentioned that on October 21, 1959, Indian police personnel on patrol at Hot Springs in Ladakh were attacked by Chinese forces, resulting in the martyrdom of ten jawans. Since 1961, the Government of India has been observing Police Commemoration Day annually to honor their sacrifice. Highlighting recent losses, Dr. Saha said, “From 2024 till August 31, 2025, around 191 police and security personnel were martyred across the country. From Tripura, two — Constable David Darlong of Tripura Police and Jawan Milon Debbarma of the 8th Battalion of Tripura State Rifles — lost their lives in the line of duty. I pay my deep respect to both of them.” He said Constable David Darlong was martyred when his vehicle fell into a deep gorge at Khedacherra on October 12, 2024, while on duty. Similarly, TSR Jawan Milon Debbarma died during an accident in Kailashahar on July 31, 2025.
